Elephantidae

Gli Elefantidi (Elephantidae Gray, 1821) sono una famiglia di mammiferi Proboscidati. La famiglia comprende tre specie viventi, l'elefante indiano o asiatico (Elephas maximus), l'elefante africano (Loxodonta africana) e l'elefante africano delle foreste (Loxodonta cyclotis), precedentemente considerata una sottospecie di L. africana.
Vivono normalmente fra i 50 e i 70 anni, ma l'elefante più longevo di cui si ha notizia ha raggiunto gli 82 anni. L'esemplare più grosso mai trovato fu ucciso in Angola nel 1956: era un maschio di 12 000 kg di peso, per un'altezza alla spalla di 4,2 metri (un metro più alto della media dell'elefante africano).

The specimen largest ever found was killed in Angola in 1956: it was a boy of 12 000 kg of weight to shoulder height of 4.2 meters (a meter higher of the average African elephant).
