Braunalgen sind besonders faszinierend für Biologen, weil sie sonderbar in allen Belangen sind. Dies kommt wahrscheinlich daher, weil sie weder verwandt mit den Tieren sind noch wirklich zu den Pflanzen gehören. Stattdessen gehören sie zu den s.g. Stramenopiles, eine Gruppe von Organismen, die hauptsächlich im Meer leben und fast so wenig mit uns verwandt sind wie Bakterien oder Amöben. Besonders interessant finde ich, dass sie durch die Evolution praktisch genauso geworden sind wie Pflanzen, es sieht aus als ob sie Wurzeln haben, doch es sind keine Wurzeln, sie haben sowas ähnliches wie Blätter, doch sind sie völlig anders aufgebaut und sie brauchen die Sonne, doch nutzen sie völlig andere Moleküle zum Sonne tanken als Pflanzen. Daran sieht man, dass egal wie oft man die Evolution anfangen würde, es würde wahrscheinlich etwas pflanzenähnliches bei rauskommen, da Organismen mit diesem Aufbau anscheinend besonders gut auf unserem Planeten zurechtkommen. Brown algae were always interesting for biologist due to their strangeness in mostly every regard. That’s probably because they are neither related to animals nor to plants. Instead they belong to the group of Stramenopiles, or Heterokonts, a group of mostly sea living organisms that are nearly as unrelated to us as bacteria or amoeba. Personally, I think it is especially noteworthy that they look like plants even though they went through a completely different evolution. They have things that look like roots, leaves and trunks, but all of them are build in a completely different way compared to plants. Also, they feature other pigments for photosynthesis called fucoxanthin which gives them their typically brown color. All of this tells us, that if evolution would start all over again, it would be pretty likely that “plant-likes” would evolve since this form seems to be handy for living on our planet. Found on Spiekeroog, an Island at the German coast, August 2019.
