Yes, Nikon D50 can work with a slave flash as is proven with this self portrait (I apologize for the model, couldn’t get another one for my experiments) It synchronizes up to 1/500 s without problem. Use a photocell for the slave flash to detect the camera flash firing and have the camera flash in manual mode so it does not fires the slave flash prematurely. You need it in manual mode also to better adjust this flash strength to control shadows intensity.
