...or "The handcraft and art of making a wonderful walking stick"

As a handle of the walking stick is suitable wood or horn, mostly from sheep's goat or buffalo. The natural shape of the horn is heated with the hot air gun, brought into the desired shape using a self-made, U-shaped tool - in the form of a horseshoe - and processed with various files and sandpaper. Sometimes the quality of the horn can only be recognized during processing.

Als Griff des Wanderstabes eignet sich Holz oder Horn, zumeist vom Schafsbock oder Buffel. Die natürliche Form des Horns wird mit der Heißluftpistole erhitzt, mittels selbst angefertigtem, u-förmigen Werkzeug - in Form eines Hufeisens - in die gewünschte Form gebracht und mit diversen Feilen und Sandpapier bearbeitet. Manchmal lässt sich die Qualität des Horns erst während der Bearbeitung erkennen.

"For a crook handle, you need at least 40cm of hollow horn for it to be a success. The thickness of the walls needs to be at least 6mm otherwise the walls are in danger of collapsing when heat and pressure processes begin. The first step is to remove the core (the quick) from inside the horn. After drying out for a year, the next step then is to reduce the size of the cavity that the removal of the core has left to make the horn suitable as a walking stick handle. This is done by a process of heating and compressing. The horn is boiled for 30 minutes and then placed in a mould and clamped in a vice overnight. The next step is to take out the natural curl in the horn. This is achieved by reheating the horn with a hot air gun and clamping it to a metal plate. The horn is gradually heated and pressed down onto the metal plate until it is flat against the plate. It is then clamped into place and left to cool overnight again."

Der erste Schritt ist es, den Kern (the quick) aus dem Inneren des Horns zu entfernen. Nach dem Austrocknen für ein Jahr, ist der nächste Schritt dann, die Größe des Lochs zu reduzieren, die die Entfernung des Kerns übrig gelassen hat.
