The cathedral of San Nicolò is the most important Catholic worship site in the city of Noto, as well as the bishopric of the diocese of the same name in Sicily. It is located on the top of a large staircase, on the north side of Piazza Municipio (area domus-ecclesiae), and is dedicated to St. Nicolò, bishop of Mira.
The construction of the temple began in 1694, and was completed in 1703, when it was open to worship with a solemn blessing. Over the centuries, however, both the façade and the interior have undergone numerous renovations, which conferred the appearance only at the end of the 19th century, with the erection of the new dome, the work of Netone Cassone.
The interior, with three aisles, houses many works of art, some of which come from Noto Antica, among which the silver urna containing mortal remains of San Corrado Confalonieri. The disastrous collapse of 1996, however, has resulted in the loss of the entire iconographic apparatus, whose refurbishment still underway makes the temple one of the last great works of contemporary sacred art. On 21 January 2012 Pope Benedict XVI raised the cathedral to a minor basilica.
