Neither future nor past exist
Neither future nor past exist. It is incorrect to say that the times are three: past, present and future. Perhaps it would be right to say that the times are three: present of the past, present of the present, present of the future. These three kinds of times exist in some way in the soul and I do not see them elsewhere: the present of the past is the memory, the present of the present the vision, the present of the future the expectation.

Per quanti passati, presenti e futuri possano esistere e per quanti tipi e sfumature di tutti e tre possano scindersi e moltiplicarsi, tu sei riuscita ad imprigionarne la sensazione in uno scatto: ombre pure nel grigio e quasi come un Giano bifronte le due donne, l'una, in ombra, rivolta all'indietro, l'altra, in piena luce, rivolta avanti. L'una a capo chino, concentrata su ciò che è stato, l'altra con lo sguardo fermo e fisso in avanti, a scrutare ciò che verrà.Gran roba ;-)

Né futuro né passato esistono. È inesatto dire che i tempi sono tre: passato, presente e futuro. Forse sarebbe esatto dire che i tempi sono tre: presente del passato, presente del presente, presente del futuro. Queste tre specie di tempi esistono in qualche modo nell'animo e non le vedo altrove: il presente del passato è la memoria, il presente del presente la visione, il presente del futuro l'attesa.Agostino d'Ippona, Confessioni, 397-400
