The lady fern --- Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth

The leaf of a common lady-fern (Athyrium filix-femina, Woodsiaceae) snapped from underneath. To my advantage, there are not so many different fern species in Germany, which makes the determination rather trivial. The next similar fern species has distinctly larger and rounder sori. A sorus, the scientific term for these black dots, is actually an accumulation of sporangia and the place of spore production. Spores are, compared to pollen, a very ancient form of wind distribution and is found only in other prehistoric plants like mosses or horsetails. Fun fact: such a fern plant produces up to 80 Million spores per year!
