7-Scape No.24 - A Meet at Court Square

On this early December afternoon, two 7 trains of Kawasaki R188 railcars
meet at the elevated Court Square Station in Long Island City, Queens.

The Manhattan-bound train at right has just departed and will follow that sweeping curve through the L-I-C cityscape toward the Sunnyside railyards where it will descend a long ramp into the Hunters Point Avenue Station from which it will continue its westbound journey underground toward the Steinway Tunnel into Manhattan.

The Flushing-bound train at left is about to depart Court Square and will continue on elevated structures toward its next stop at Queensboro Plaza. On the way to Queensboro Plaza, the track configuration will change from side-by-side to one above the other (*) to align with that two-level elevated station the 7 shares with the N and W trains of the Astoria Line.

Beyond the trains, a pair of rooftop water tanks add iconic interest to the cityscape.

The moment was captured in 2018 while train chasing with my German friend and
fellow photog/7 Train devotee Hans-Gerd Hacker. It makes its first appearance today.

"7-Scapes" is a series of photographs, both under- and above-ground, taken along the route of
the 7 Train between 34th St-Hudson Yards in Manhattan and Flushing-Main St in Queens.
It grew out of a long-standing fascination with the line that began in my late teens
and which I finally began to document photographically in 2013.
