Baixa (Coimbra, Portugal)

"Baixa" means something like "downtown area" in Portuguese, and usually refers to old parts of towns and cities (what you would call "Altstadt" in Germany, for example).
For years now, there has been talk of actually roofing this area to make it more agreeable in rain.
Luckily, none of those plans have become reality yet, and hopefully never will. I'm not sure how easy shopping in the rain would compensate for the loss of a view like this.

Anyhow, Portugal being the poor country it is, this area isn't exactly well maintained, so this view is an endagered species anyway.

"Baixa" heißt so viel wie "Innenstadt" auf Portugiesisch, und bezeichnet generell so etwas wie die deutsche Altstadt.
In den letzten Jahren wurde viel über Denkmalschutz und Erneuerungsmaßnahmen dieser Zone diskutiert. Ideen wie die Überdachung dieser Fußgängerzone sind bislang zum Glück nicht Realität geworden.

Der schwere finanzielle Stand des Landes führt jedoch dazu, dass diese Zone nur sehr mangelhaft gewartet wird, und diese Ansicht somit sozusagen vom Aussterben bedroht ist.
