Colourful lichen

Found on an old roof, Cape Town, South Africa.

Lichens are complex plants made up of algae and fungi growing in symbiotic association on a solid surface. In the photo you can see them as the clusters of yellow-green and light grey shapes.

Thank you Sonja for pointing out to me the spelling mistake in the original caption, which must have been very puzzling to German speaking viewers - " leichen" would translate to corpses!!

Oops, I made a spelling mistake! It is supposed to be "lichen" - a complex plant made up of an alga and a fungus growing in symbiotic association. The lichens are the green and grey clusters of things you see between the flaking paint, pic taken on an old roof which we were repairing. The white square is a piece of membrane used to waterproof a roof screw. Thanks for your comment!
