Medieval remnants of Avgonyma (for further information please refer to the previous photo in the gallery.Thank you very much).

Chios has always been a mong the strongest and richest greek islands during the period of Latin but also Ottoman occupation and enjoyed a remarkable degree of independance by the authorities due to the famous local product , the "masticha" especially favored by the Sultan mother(Valide). During the war of Independance the local rich captains and merchants offered ships and money but eventually the island was invaded by the Turks,the locals suffered a massacre and the island was "razored" to end, 1822. (Eugene Delacroix famous painting "Le massacre de Scio"1824. Musee de Louvre).

In the photo of Avgonyma one can see houses of locals among the medieval ruins.

amazing how full your country is of history meeting the presence ... again so interesting the past here and fantastic your image showing the old ruins and houses in between .... love that dramatic sky too, especially in black and white !!!

I am increasingly surprised by the beauty of your land, Alexander, full of interesting things, the ruins, the architectureto the nature ... This village with medieval remains is fantastic, I think you should know more and bring some 'wealth to these magnificent places
