Das Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst fast ganz Australien, die Art fehlt dort als Brutvogel nur im nördlichsten Queensland. Sie kommt außerdem isoliert in den Snow Mountains auf Neuguinea sowie auf einigen Inseln um Australien vor.
Der Graubartfalke bewohnt offene Landschaften aller Art von stark aufgelockerten Wäldern und Küstendünen bis zu landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flächen und städtischen Grünflächen und Brachen.
The distribution area covers almost all of Australia, the species is missing there as a breeding bird only in the northern Queensland. It also comes isolated in the Snowmountains of New Guinea and some islands around Australia.
The Nankeen kestrel inhabits open landscapes of all kinds from heavily dislodged forests and coastal dunes to agricultural areas and urban green spaces and brownfields.
