Squash Spider (Araniella cucurbitina) (2)

Araniella cucurbitina usually spins small webs between leaves. These webs are irregularly shaped and only about 10 cm in diameter with 15 to 30 rays. The spider usually hangs upside down in its middle waiting for prey of mainly flying insects.

The camouflage of the squash spider changes with the color of the vegetation. At birth, in the fall, the young spiderlings are red and then turn brown during the winter. Adult spiders first show their yellow-green color in spring.

The images of the squash spider were taken with a Canon 5D Mark III mounted with the macro photo lens MP E 65 mm.
