the grief stricken emperor

North India The Taj Mahal mausoleum in Agra.
Taj Mahal in Agra is a white marble mausoleum built from 1632 to 1653 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan that was grief stricken by the death of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal during the birth of his 14th child. At the inauguration ceremony he also recited his poem:
Should guilty seek asylum here,
Like one pardoned, he becomes free of sin
Should a sinner make his way to this mansion
All his past sins are to be washed away
The site of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs
And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes
In this world this edifice has been made
to display there by the creator's glory.
The monument is an exquisite piece of islamic architecture universally admired as a masterpiece of world's heritage. In 1983, Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This photo exposes one side as a detail of the monument.

i agree with andy wood and find this image strikingly emotional, as it puts one in the shoes of "the grief stricken emperor": my eyes follow the tiled way into the depth of the image where eternity lurks. how can i survive my remaining time on earth without the lost one? how can i bear the unbearable lightness, the sunshine, when all i feel is shrouded by darkness? i've lost my footing, i'm groping my way with my back against the wall. the day she dies marks an end, a caesura of which the slender tower is the emblem. my heart is a temple of grief. my mausoleum is a haven. my belief makes me go on.

    greetings, sabine.

fantastic view from this perspective ... great depth, superb details - and a very different view from the one usually shown of the Taj. Yes, it is a splendid mausoleum - I remember it fondly in the first light of the morning :-)))
    greetings, Adele
