The Living Forest (317) : Common Hawthorn

Common Hawthorn (also known as single-seeded hawthorn) is a very thorny bush or small tree that is often extensively planted as a hedge plant, especially for agricultural use, but can also frequently be found in the forest as a solitary grower.

It blooms in spring (month of May) with abundant white flowers.
However, these flowers look lovely but they all have a faint scent of rotting meat, which results in pollination of the flowers by flies rather than by bees.

German name : Eingriffeliger Weissdorn
Latin name : Crataegus monogyna

I like hawthorn and how it grows in such abundance .. your image nice and close with fine sharp details in the tiny blossoms ... and your explanation tells me why all I could find on them were very small flies !!!
