Endangered Eryngo --- Eryngium maritimum L.

Hier eine kleine botanische Besonderheit von der Insel Spiekeroog. Eine Stranddistel, auf Latein Eryngium maritimum, die leider stark gefährdet ist. Auch wenn sie Distel heißt, ist diese Pflanze eher ein Fall von konvergenter Evolution, bei der ähnliche Organismen entstehen, wenn sie sich an gleiche Bedingungen anpassen. Sie gehört nämlich zu den Doldenblütlern (Apiaceae), anstatt zu den Korbblütlern (Asteraceae), in denen die meisten der anderen Disteln einsortiert sind. Sie sind also nicht verwandt. Das ähnliche Aussehen kommt wahrscheinlich eher von den Anpassungen an den Strand, auf dem diese Art vorkommt. Die Blätter sind dick und von bläulichem Wachs umgeben, um gegen UV-Strahlen und Sandstrahlung zu schützen. Eine sehr interessante Pflanze die auf der Insel zum Glück noch oft vorkommt.

Here the picture of a little botanical exceptionality that I snapped on the island of Spiekeroog, North Sea, Germany. The sea holly or seaside eryngo, called Eryngium maritimum, which is, unfortunately, heavily endangered. Even though this plant looks like a thistle, it really isn’t one. Instead of being a member of the family of Asteraceae, like most of the thistles, this plant is a member of the Apiaceae family. Hence, this plant presents a case of convergent evolution, where similar appearances evolve as soon as organisms face similar environmental conditions. The leaves are thick and covered with blueish wax making them look like a thistle. Yet, these traits are probably more like adaptations to UV-radiation and sandblasting, being the strongest problems in their natural habitat, the beach. A very interesting plant and luckily, still easy to find on this little German island.
