Exact twenty-two dots --- Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata L.

Lange ist es her das ich mal wieder was veröffentliche, aber jetzt bin ich aus der Isolation zurück!

Hier das Foto eines Zweiundzwanzigpunkt-Marienkäfer (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata) aus der Familie der Marienkäfer (Coccinellinae), den ich im Garten gefunden habe. Diese Art hat anders als der wohl bekannteste Siebenpunkt keine rote, sondern eine gelbe Färbung, kommt aber ähnlich wie sein Verwandter überall in unseren Breiten vor. Bemerkenswert ist vor alle, dass er anders als die meisten Vertreter keine Pflanzenläuse oder Milben frisst, sondern Pilze, Echten Mehltau, um genau zu sein (Erysiphales). Dennoch ist er ein Nützling, da dieser Pilz für die weißen Flecken auf vielen Blättern verantwortlich ist, und diesen normalerweise schadet. Ein toller kleiner Kerl der neben seinem ikonischen Kollegen allerdings etwas untergeht.

After a way to long time I’m finally out of my isolation!

Here the picture of a so called 22-spot ladybird (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata) that belongs, obviously, to the ladybird family (Coccinellinae). Found in my local garden in NRW, Germany. This species has, compared to its famous colleague, no bright red color with seven dots, instead it wears a yellow elytrum with 22 dots in sum. Really exceptional however is the fact that this species does not eat aphids! Instead it feeds on powdery mildew, a fungus causing white dots on leaves and parasitizing its host plant. So this ladybird is still very useful even though it’s renown is not as big as the one of it’s red relatives.
