Japanese Quince

Japanese Quince is a thorny deciduous shrub, native to Japan, and was introduced into European gardens in the 18th century.

It is best known for its colorful bright red flowers in early spring.
In autumn, small apple-shaped fruits with a golden colour are produced.

The fruits are edible, but hard and very unpleasant to eat raw. They are however suitable for making liqueurs as well as marmalade.

Dutch name : Japanse sierkwee
German name : Japanische Zierquitte
Latin name : Chaenomeles japonica

they are such a cheerful sight these days! i guess it's because this kind of red is rare this early in the year. poppies and roses come later, so right now they are unmatched in bright happy redness… a beautiful shot of a beautiful shrub in opulent spring bloom! greetings, sabine. p.s.: love the shallow dof and the hint of a blue sky in the distance!

Die Japanische Zierquitte ist eine der fotogensten Blüten im Garten. Wir haben sie auch im Vorgarten.
