Kammeni (fem) in Greek means "burned".
Just opposite to the main rock of Santorini one can see the little island of Kammeni. This island is the site of the volcano crater that can be reached after 30-45 min walk. The crater-according to my view- isn't much impressive though and one could wonder how it gave such a powerful eruption and so extensive damage...

what a terrific image, alexander! i completely agree with adele on its spectacular ambience! if one looks at the seemingly sunkissed island alone, surrounded by a velvety sea and under the surveillance of a moody sky, he gets the impression of a separate but ominous peace. the further one then scrolls down the page, bringing the jagged rocks of santorini into view, the more powerful the sense of ominousness becomes, because they seem to be gesticulating wildly across the bay, as though still hating the volcanic island dearly and wanting revenge for the disaster it once inflicted on santorini eons ago. ; ) greetings, sabine.
