Die Basstölpel auf Helgoland sind sehr bedroht durch die Vogelgrippe und durch den Menschen.
Die Plastikabfälle im Meer, vor allem Fischernetze führen häufig zum unweigerlichen Tod, dies durch Verschlingen oder um den Schnabel, so dass keine Nahrungsaufnahme mehr möglich ist.
