‘Mr Pitt’s Ditch’

so called after the Duke of York and Prime Minister William Pitt.

peaceful now, *The Royal Military Canal* shows us calmness and areas to rest.
Short after the somehow curious 'Amiens peace' in 1802, the threat of Napoleon's plans for a united Europe ... by declaring war on neighbours ... motivated ingenious people to defend the Romney Marsh against a most likely invasion there.
Thus the plans of the Military Canal to defend the Marsh, as the Marshs were very very flat - and a ideal place to land boats on.

the The Royal Military Canal converted Romney Marsh into an island - in fact. But it still serves well as water flooding in summertime when needed and drainage in wintertime. It is now (SSSI) -Site of Special Scientific Interest- and (SAM) -Scheduled Ancient Monument -
