Old and New Walls Mixing in Diocletian's Ancient Fortress

Split, Croatia

Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, DIOCLETIAN'S PALACE is the main attraction of the city of SPLIT, CROATIA. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast. Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome - now part of Croatia.
The so-called palace was a massive structure and contains not only the palace itself but also buildings, intended for housing military garrison.
The whole complex occupied around 30,000 square meters. Today these ruins lie in the heart of the city of Split in Croatia. The ancient fortress has become the old town of Split, with numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and also apartments, located in the old buildings on narrow streets of the palace/fortress. Today around 3000 people live on the territory of Diocletian’s palace.

A very beautiful and I should say,documentary picture Adele, reflecting the mood of a fed up and rather tired Diocletian, presenting the speedy decline of the roman empire and looking for a quite place to relax in peace...Nicely taken shot with many details to linger on and on the lower wall where the people rest one can see the first traces of the rising early Byzantine architecture, the row of the red bricks. Only 15 years later, Constantine the Great would be founding on Bosporus the legendary Constantinople capital of the Byzantine empire that for more than thousand years would radiate in the East propagating greek language culture and civilization together with Christian Orthodox religion.Humanity and civilization move continuously forward exchanging culture as in relay no matter if some crazy "adversaries", at any time, are doing their best for the opposite...
