Rush Hour on the Huai River
I watched patiently as the two men steered their boat to the shore of the Huai River in Anhui. The evening had a gentle warmth, and the sun seemed to change colour by the second. The only sound was the deep cut of the oars through the heavy waters. This area is a major flood zone. A system of sluice gates has been built on this part of the river, and its flow has been redirected onto artificial flood plains in a bid to save people from perishing should the water level suddenly rise in heavy rains.
