Pieter,At the background you can see the old narrow gage railway path coming from another colliery upstream. And, You can't see on the picture but at the left hand side there is a slope. So the building you mention hosted a machine coupled with a drum an a cable to take down the wagons loaded with coal and take up the empty wagons.
