The Ambracian marshes

Greece
Northwestern Ionian Sea
Ambracian Gulf
The marsh Rodia

Ambracian Gulf is located in the northwestern part of Greece, in Epirus, and communicates with Ionian Sea with a narrow strip of water. It's a wonderful place forming a large and complex ecocystem by the Deltas of two rivers and contains the largest Greek marsh Rodia as well as many very productive lagoons making it a very important wetland region characterized of international importance protected by the RAMSAR. A real paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers and one of the most important routes for migratory birds finding an ideal place for nesting and breeding in the extensive areas of rich mudflats, shallow bays, reed beds and flooded medows. The feeding grounds of the marshes are famous for their extended areas and especially for the variety of colours they take under various weather and temperature conditions through the seasons. Sometimes the thickness is such that you can walk safely on them provided you can escape the stiffs of insects, especially mosquitos, that are on attack.

These marshes were, in particular, the target of my photography during this trip selecting, as advised, the last days of August as the extremes of high temperature and rains not only "nourishe" the soil but also account for the unbeleivable variation of colours on it.
In order to get as real touch as possible, I used the large format (6x4,5) of Mamiya AFD II, the 120 Velvia, Provia slides film and,of course, a sturdy tripod. Then I scanned the positives in the NIKON Coolscan 9000.
The heat was more than...35 and thank God I skipped malaria....

    Che meravigliosa serie.
Una natura che mi ricorda la tecnica pittorica degli Impressionisti, stupendi anche i colori.
    W la Grecia.
Un caro saluto dear Doc. e complimenti per le tue fotografie, CIAo!  cris
