The Living Forest (217) : Aerial Roots

This shot does not show the beginning of new tree growth in the forest but it shows the typical aerial roots of a Pond Cypress (a deciduous conifer that is native to North America).

Aerial roots are cone-shaped organs that are often grown upwards by this Cypress.
They have an underground connection with the central root system of the tree and they enable the tree to breathe extra air when it grows in heavy waterlogged soil.

In the USA there exist Pond Cypresses that have aerial roots up to 2 meter high ! Must be a fascinating natural phenomenon.

German name : Luftwurzeln von Aufrechte Sumpfzypresse
Latin name : Aeria radices de Taxodium distichum var. imbricatum

(the reddish soil in the shot are the fallen needles of the Pond Cypress)

Location : National Park at Meise, Belgium

An excellent look at the architecture of nature. What interesting growths. At first I thought they were some type of fungi. We don't have cypress here. We do have false cypress that does okay. Interesting footnotes, I've learned a lot from them.

Was für eine wunderbare Aufnahme - welch beeindruckendes Motiv!!! - Ich dachte beim Vorschaubild als erstes auch an kleine Tiere ! Klasse sind auch die Farben - sie passen so wunderbar in diese Tage!
