The Living Forest (35) : Red Squirrel

Last week I made a few hikes in the ‘Hertogenwald’ (2nd. greatest forest of Belgium) and spotted this Red Squirrel desperately seeking for food on the forest soil.

In winter, Red Squirrels living in the neighbourhood of human settlements, can often been found on feeding tables for birds. However, if you happen to live deep in the heart of the forest so grand, there are no feeding tables and it’s obvious not easy to remember where all those delicious nuts were buried before winter started…….. !

Dutch name : Rode eekhoorn
German name : Eichhörnchen
Latin name : Sciurus vulgaris

Hallo Mark, Dein Eichhörnchen auf Futtersuche ist klasse und von sehr guter Schärfe, so auf dem Boden habe ich noch keines so schön erwischt, weil mal ihnen auf dem Boden auch nicht so nah kommt.
