The Smiling Buddha
at the International Buddhist Society in Richmond, just south of Vancouver -
a very peaceful and beautiful place to visit - and I will show you a few images ....
Budai (the smiling Buddha) is traditionally depicted as an obese, bald man wearing a robe and wearing or otherwise carrying prayer beads. He carries his few possessions in a cloth sack, being poor but content. He is often depicted entertaining or being followed by adoring children. His figure appears throughout Chinese culture as a representation of contentment. His image graces many temples, restaurants, amulets, and businesses.

ignorant me knows so little about buddha… when i spotted your image, it suddenly struck me that i hadn't the slightest idea why he was always depicted as obese? a sign of luck? happiness? peace of mind? oneness with the world? well, i found a very interesting wikipedia entry on "budai": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budai beautifully composed, adele, i agree! and i love the light on his ivory face – it makes him look so animated! can almost hear him give a delighted chortle! ; ) hugs, sabine.chantal Montmasson in Ghiroldi 18/05/2015 15:38
