Romanesque Bridge of Vilar de Mouros

Having been built between the 14th and 15th centuries, this Romanesque bridge enters the transition period of the Low Middle Ages and the Gothic. Therefore, it becomes a reference for some historians, classifying it as one of the prototypes of national Gothic bridges, of an extreme historical value and of great interest, to the point that they consider it well to preserve and protect this Monument.
Located in the center of the parish, at the south entrance of the village of Ponte and next to the Chapel of Santo Amaro, crossing the Coura River, this bridge served the medieval route that connected Caminha to Valença and the Galician border.
Built in granite, it is formed by three broken arches, with the one in the center of greater dimension, interspersed on prismatic chisels that reduce the weight of the structure and also serve to cut the water. The board, with a small gap, suggests that it may have a Roman origin, a hypothesis that has not yet been confirmed.
Indeed, the bridge in all its simplicity, without any element of fortification, corresponds to a utilitarian character of most of the low-medieval bridges. Its broken arches correspond to the Gothic era.
The importance of this bridge is confirmed from 1910, when it became a National Monument.

Excellente vision N&B, aux gris pleins de présence, dans ce pont roman très bien conservé dont les pierres de granit et les arches légèrement cintrées ont belle allure.
