He's checking to make sure the center of the palm isn't split Barbara. It's really an exceptional series, every one of the pictures.

Esti, your documentation of the seriousness of choosing the items is fantastic. It's a thanksgiving that non-Jews rarely have knowledge of. I had an Orthodox friend who's father was a Rabbi, so I have contact knowledge. I'm really enjoying this series of yours.

This palm breach is one of the four kinds of plants which one has to bring to the sucot-hut. (the others are myrtle, willow and etrog-citron). It should be undamaged. That is why he checks it so thoroughly.
