The Middle Ages (116) : Travelling Dentist

This series is an attempt to illustrate how life was going on in the Middle Ages.

This inclement looking man was a travelling dentist.

The middle ages was truly a period of suffering for those having toothaches. The most common treatment during that time was having a tooth brutally removed.

This tended to be done by a travelling dentist (with all kinds of cruel pliers and rusty hooks) and with no anaesthetic, unless you were drunk in advance….. :-))

Du machst mir Angst... muss am Montag und am Donnerstag zum Zahnarzt. Allerdings ist mein ZA etwas moderner ausgestattet. (Ich mag ihn trotzdem nicht!)

This guy has put a lot of work into his costume. Are those his tools at his belt? I would be interested in seeing his cruel pliers.

a wonderful portrait of this dentist in his finery ... what a far cry from
today's white-coated dentists .... however, this doc's expression is
just a bit intimidating :-))

Oh je - die waren ja nicht gerade für sanfte Methoden bekannt. Aber schmuck sieht er aus, der Dentist. Häufig haben auch "Bader" die Zähne gezogen... Eine ganz feine Reihe ist das!!! LG! a.
